As of January 1999, the status of the Run II Networking Hardware WBS Element is:

The single mode fiber installation from the Feynman Computing Center to
D0 has been installed (WBS 1.1).

Bid specifications for the D0 Portakamps (WBS 1.4) and D0 Online Network (WBS 1.7)
upgrades have been prepared and reviewed by representatives of the D0 experiment
(WBS 1.4.1 and WBS 1.7.1), but submission of the requisitions awaits distribution
of funds for the Run II Network budget.

Bid specifications for the CDF Online Network (WBS 1.6) upgrade have been developed.
They are at the stage where they need to reviewed with representatives of the
CDF experiment (WBS 1.6.1). Submission of the resultant requisitions also awaits
distribution of funds for the Run II Network budget.

Efforts are underway by the Data Communications Group and RIP to test
Gigabit Ethernet products over the single mode fiber installation from the
Feynman Computing Center to D0 (WBS 1.8).

The Distributed Computing Department continues to investigate and test
selected commercial Gigabit Ethernet switch/router products, as well as
collaborate on the hardware installation of the RIP, PC Farms, Enstore,
and SAM prototypes.

Preliminary efforts are underway to morph the Network Hardware WBS element into a
more general Run II Network Task Force (subject to approval by the Run II Steering
Committee). Representatives of the Farms, Enstore, RIP, and Physics Data Analysis
will be invited to participate in the revisions to the Gigabit Network Technology
WBS Element (WBS 1.8), in order to determine the network architecture and the
specifications for the network equipment acquisitions.

Once the equipment has been specified, the acquisition of the selected networking
equipment will also be dependant on the status of the distribution of funds for
the Run II Network budget.
